| The Celestron #4060 Research Microscope is Celestron’s finest biological microscope. It is a binocular microscope that lets you use both eyes to examine a two-dimensional image. It is not a stereo microscope, which shows a specimen in three dimensions. That type of viewing is only available in very low magnification instruments. The #4060 has a 45° inclined binocular head that can be rotated 360°. You can work comfortably for long periods without neck strain when you view at a 45° viewing angle, rather than looking straight down into a vertical or nearly vertical eyepiece. In addition, when your two eyes are used simultaneously to view a single image, you can see up to 40% more detail than you can when using only one eye, as with a conventional single eyepiece microscope. The interpupillary adjustment of 55mm to 75mm will match virtually everyone’s eye spacing. The #4060 uses an AC-powered adjustable brightness illuminator. Also supplied is an Abbe condenser with an iris diaphragm and contrast-enhancing filters. The large mechanical stage has a movement range of 70mm x 40mm (2.75” x 1.57”). Celestron supplies four achromatic objectives – 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x (oil) – and two sets of eyepieces. The 10x eyepieces give powers of 40x, 100x, 400x, and 1000x. The 15x eyepiece gives powers of 60x, 150x, 600x, and 1500x. All in all, a very complete and very solidly built high quality microscope that will give you years of satisfying use. This Microscope’s Specifications . . . - Optical head: Binocular head, inclined at a 45° angle. Head rotates 360° to find the most comfortable working position. A locking thumbscrew holds the selected position. The eyepiece holders can be individually focused to match the user’s eyesight.
- Interpupillary distance: The distance between the optical centerlines of the two eyepieces can be varied from 55mm to 75mm to accommodate the user’s eye spacing.
- Illuminator: Built-in sub-stage electric illuminator using a long-life 6 Volt 20-watt halogen bulb with a variable brightness control. The illuminator is powered by 110 Volt/60 Hz household AC through a built-in AC/DC transformer. Three color filters (red, green, and blue) are provided for specimen contrast enhancement.
- Condenser: The height (and consequently the light spread) of the Abbe-type sub-stage condenser can be adjusted by means of a condenser adjustment handwheel. The condenser also has an iris diaphragm to control the amount of light passing through the condenser and the depth of field of the specimen being viewed.
- Stage: The mechanical stage measures 123mm (4.8”) by 153mm (6”) with a lever-operated specimen holder clamp arm. The stage’s specimen mover has dual positioning knobs (transverse and longitudinal) and a working range of 70mm x 40mm.
- Supplied eyepieces: Four eyepieces are provided, two of 10x magnification and two of 15 x magnification.
- Supplied objectives: Four achromatic objectives are provided – 4x, 10x, 40x, and 100x (oil).
- Available magnifications: The supplied eyepieces and objectives provide magnifications of 40x, 60x, 100x, 150x, 400x, 600x, 1000x (oil), and 1500x (oil).
- Nosepiece: Quadruple rotary objective turret with positive clickstops and a knurled rubber grip ring for easier objective lens changes.
- Focusing: Dual focusing knobs (coarse and fine) are provided. The knobs are numerically calibrated, with index marks.
- Other accessories: A vial of cedar wood oil is provided to use in conjunction with the 100x objective to improve the resolution at powers of 1000x and 1500x. A plastic dust cover if provided to keep the microscope dust free when it’s not in use.
