Resolution
The ability of a telescope to separate closely-spaced binary stars into two objects, measured in seconds of arc. One arc second equals 1/3600th of a degree and is about the width of a 25-cent coin at a distance of three miles! In essence, a measure of how much detail a telescope can reveal. In theory, resolution equals 5.45 arc seconds divided by the aperture of the scope (in inches), so that an 8" scope has a resolution of 0.69 arc seconds, and can show as two joined points binary stars separated by that small an angular distance - but see Dawes' Limit.
