| This 22x eyepiece is designed to give you half the power, and twice the field view with the 80mm Celestron Explorascope than the scope's standard equipment 44x eyepiece (and it provides an even wider field 20x with the 100mm Explorascope). The field of view is 2° across with the 80mm scope, four times the diameter of the full Moon. That makes this eyepiece a natural for scanning big deep space sights, such as the Pleiades open star cluster, as well as for more expansive views of birds, wildlife, and other daytime terrestrial scenes. With four times the image brightness of the scope’s standard 44x eyepiece, it’s super for looking at faint nebulas and galaxies, too. The eyepiece threads onto the Explorascope’s focuser drawtube, but has a standard 1.25” barrel that allows it to be used with any telescope that uses 1.25” accessories. Celestron does not specify the optical design of the eyepiece, but we suspect it is a three-element Kellner, based on its field of view and image characteristics. Eye relief is quite long, so it provides virtually unvignetted views for those who must wear eyeglasses while observing.
